This 30 day minimalism challenge was just that, a challenge! The concept is to get rid of 1 item in your home on the first day, 2 on the second day, 3 items on the third day, and so on. By the end of the 30-day challenge, that is 465 items! Indeed, a monumental task!
This challenge was unique for me in two ways. For one, we had just moved into our house less than a year from when I began this challenge. I tried really hard to downsize the things we were moving, as to not bring things we no longer needed. It was inevitable to end up bringing things we didn’t actually use because some day we might “need” it. Secondly, the previous owners of our home left a TON of things behind. Despite them coming back after we moved in to gather their unwanted belongings, we were still left with many things to get rid of. (Including enough granite to open a showroom. A story for another day!)
Despite this, I fully believe that everyone has enough in their home to successfully participate in a 30-day minimalism challenge.
Day 1 was easy! The first item I removed was an old heart-shaped chocolate mold. I had never used this item once! It was grimy and dirty and it was not bringing any value to my home. As the days went on, the challenge became more, well, challenging!
Day 30 was much more difficult! I had to scrounge around the house for items to part with. Additionally, I got rid of an old nail polish that I had literally had for 8 or 9 years and never used! I also got rid of some clothing, old cups we never used and a bunch of old tiles. My favorite things by far to get rid of were some old crusty shirts of my husbands that I finally convinced him to part with.
All in all, the challenge was very rewarding. I donated a ton of items to our local thrift store and cleared and decluttered several spaces in my home.
I encourage you to give this 30-day minimalism challenge a try! If you do, let me know how it goes!
