5 Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Ants In Your Home

Fun fact about ants: they help open peony blossoms!

Chemicals aren't the only answer!

Your first thought when you see ants invading your home may likely be to kill them all with chemicals and get rid of them as fast as possible. Which seems quite logical, if I am being honest. But when you look to chemicals as your first line of defense in correcting an ant problem, they may not be the only thing you are harming.

Chemicals harm more than just the ants

In addition to these chemicals having a potential to harm you, your family, and your pets, they also have a potential to harm the environment and other beneficial insects around your home. While a natural remedy may take a bit longer or require a few methods, it is worth it to keep your family and environment safe!

5 Natural Alternatives

Using the methods below are just a few ways you can naturally free your home from ants. These methods are a safe alternative to chemicals and are safe around children and pets.

Ants are good for the environment

Despite being widely viewed as pests, ants are actually good for the environment. Anteaters and other insects and animals depend on ants for their diets, which also helps control the population of ants. Ants are useful in helping with termite control, as they eat termites as a part of their diet. Ants are also great scavengers for dead organisms, which ultimately gets returned to the soil to be enriched.

Citrus:

Ants do not like the smell of citrus. In an effort to deter them, place dried citrus peels near openings of the house. When you are done with the peels, you can compost them.

Cucumbers:

Ants do not like the taste of cucumbers. You can place them where ants are entering to deter them. Just be sure not to leave them out too long so you don’t attract other pests.

Peppermint Essential Oils:

Dab a cotton ball with some peppermint oil to throw off the ants sense of smell. This will confuse them so they can’t locate a potential food source. I use an organic peppermint oil that you can purchase here.

Coffee Grounds:

Sprinkle around the perimeter of your home to help deter ants. Adding peppermint oil to the grounds will give it an added boost.

Vinegar and Water:

Add equal parts of vinegar and water into a spray bottle and spray where the ants are entering. This will help repel ants. As an added bonus, vinegar and water is a great cleaning agent. Just be sure not to spray vinegar on natural stone surfaces such as granite or marble, as it can damage those surfaces.

Be Patient!

Again, these methods may take longer or require a few different tries rather than chemical treatment, but you get the benefit of keeping your living space free from harmful chemicals.
