We all know that a well-balanced diet of fruit and vegetables is recommended for good health. What better way to get your fill than growing your own? The CDC recommends that adults consume “1.5–2 cup-equivalents of fruits and 2–3 cup-equivalents of vegetables daily”. When you are growing your own fruits and veg, it makes consuming the recommended amount, (or even more!) much easier.
When I am in the garden, all of my worries seem to melt away. In the garden, I am focused and completely absorbed in what I am doing. This is called being in a state of “flow”. Positive psychologists consider being in the state of flow an important part of metal health and overall well-being.
Starting a garden is a great investment. Depending on the size of garden you grow, it can get pricey. But I like to think of it as an investment. Not only to your wallet, but to your health as well. Once the initial cost of the garden is invested, it doesn’t have to cost a lot to maintain. You will be saving money at the grocery store by growing your own food. Plus, you can save seeds from your harvest and plant them for the next growing season.
If you don’t have the space of your own to grow a garden, a community garden can be a great resource. A community garden can bring people together and allow for sharing of resources. This can be especially beneficial for the elderly community or people who live a solitary lifestyle as an opportunity to build relationships within the community.
If you have ever grown anything at all, you know how rewarding it can be! There is something really special about planting a seed, watching it grow, and harvesting the creation you have helped produce. It is very gratifying to be able to feed your family with the food that you have grown yourself. Gardening can increase your self-esteem as you grow as a gardener and brings added happiness to everyday life!
Gardening gives you a sense of accomplishment. There is so something therapeutic to me about pulling weeds. I always feel so accomplished after cleaning a space of weeds and making it look beautiful. Whether its weeding or harvesting, I get a sense of accomplishment from completing tasks in the
garden.
Now more than ever, the negative impact of the human race on the planet is in the spotlight. Planting fruits, vegetables and flowers is something positive we can do to impact the environment. Plants are natural and effective air cleansers. They absorb carbon dioxide as well as other air pollutants. Plus, planting a garden makes your environment beautiful!
There is something very spiritual about connecting with mother nature. When you take time to unwind and relax in nature, you can reconnect with your soul. Connecting with the energy of the earth is magical to me. It is easy to get lost in the moment and lose complete track of time in the garden.
