Complete A No-Spend Month!

Save For Later!

If you’re like me, and are new to this, a no spend January (or any month, for that matter) is just what it sounds like. For the entire month of January, there is no extra or unnecessary spending.

Too Much Spending!

If your December was anything like mine, then you spent way too much money! Actually, I spent way too much money the entire year! I feel like I have been bleeding money and it’s time to apply a tourniquet! I am trying something new this year and participating in no spend January.

What is a No Spend Month?

If you’re like me, and are new to this, a no spend January (or any month, for that matter) is just what it sounds like. For the entire month of January, there is no extra or unnecessary spending.

Benefits to No Spend Months

Whether you begin in January or any other month of the year, there are many benefits to no spend months.

Save Money – The main benefit of having a no spend month is that you will be saving money. This can allow you to build up your savings account, save for a goal, pay off bills or create an emergency fund.

Reset Your Spending Habits – How aware are you of the money you are spending each month? Taking a break from spending will give you an opportunity to identify what your spending habits and trigger are.

The Best Things in Life are Free – If you are taking a break from spending, you will have an opportunity to remember that some of the best things in life are free. Spend time with family and friends without spending money. Get out into nature or read a book. The library is a great resource to pick up a book without spending money. (Unless of course, you have late fees to pay!)

Stop Impulse Buying – There is an instant gratification that comes from impulse buys. When you are choosing to participate in a no spend month, you refrain from impulsively buying things. Only buy things that are on your list. Sometimes I find if I walk around a store long enough, I talk myself out of a purchase.

Relieve the Stress and Pressure of Buying – It can be stressful to feel like you have to keep up with the Joneses. Maybe you have FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and feel the need to have the latest and greatest technology. Ending the vicious cycle of feeling the need to spend can help your stress levels. Give yourself a break!

Before You Start

To set yourself up for success, first decide why you want to participate in a no spend month. Maybe it is for one of the benefits above, or another reason. It really doesn’t matter, as long as you know what you are trying to get out of it. Second, have a goal for the money you want to save. Are you saving for a trip, paying off a credit card, putting the money in savings? It’s totally up to you!

A few tips to set you up for success!

  • Keep paying your monthly bills! You should be keeping up with your monthly responsibilities.
  • Make up your own rules. You can be as strict or as lenient as you want for your no spend challenge.
  • Get a calendar and write down any events (birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, etc.) you have coming up for the month you decide to complete the challenge. This way you can plan for things you may need to spend on.
  • Take a look at previous bank statements to get an idea of what your spending habits are.
  • Be aware of what trigger your spending habits. Is it boredom? A big sale? Know your triggers and learn how to plan for success.
  • Make a list of things you can do for free.

Have fun and good luck!
