You may be asking yourself, what is a survival kit? A survival kit is a pack that contains essential supplies that you may need during an emergency. Sounds expensive, right?! But it really doesn’t have to be! If you are just getting started, putting together a kit from the Dollar Tree is a smart idea. Like I have said before, this is not an end-all, be-all kit. This is just the basics to get you started. Once you have the basics covered, you can go ahead and purchase better quality, more expensive items. Do this a little at a time so you don’t overwhelm yourself.
Keeping your survival gear is a great idea if you ever need to grab it quick and go!
Now that you know what a survival kit is, you may be asking yourself why you need to have one. The answer is simple, really. If an emergency strikes, be it weather, or some other unforeseen issue, you want to be prepared for you and your family! Having a survival kit on hand will give you peace of mind that you can provide some safety for you and your loved ones.
I have put together a list of the basics that you can get
right at the Dollar Tree. These items are mostly self-explanatory, so I will
just list them below. If you are looking for more in-depth info, you can watch
my video here.
I got all of these items for about $35 from the Dollar Tree.
1.      Lighter
2.      Matches
3.      Candles
4.      Flashlights
5.      Band-Aids
6.      Medications
7.      Solar Lights
8.      Ziplock Bags
9.      Garbage Bags
10.  Cleaning Supplies
11.  Food
12.  Water
13.  Antibacterial Wipes
14.  Batteries
15.  Drop Cloths/Tarps
16.  Scissors
17.  Zip ties
18.  Sharpie
19.  Moisture Eliminators
20.  Rain Ponchos
21. Rope
I do have one word of caution on several items you can get at the Dollar Tree such as medications and band-aids. You can probably get more for your money on some of these items at places like Wal-Mart, Target or even your grocery store. Sure, you are only paying $1.25, but the quantity you are getting is much lower than if you paid just a few more dollars elsewhere.
Start small with this if you need to. There is no need to run right out and buy it all now if you do not have the resources. When I need to purchase multiples of items, I sometimes split it up between trips so I am not buying it all at once.
It would be a smart idea to keep a list of the items that you have, along with the quantity of items so you can purchase more if you run out.
