I have been quite open with the struggles I have been having lately. I feel pulled by a force greater than myself to share, with the hopes and intention that it will reach someone else who is also struggling and help them with their own journey. Additionally, I believe it will help me with my own journey.
It is not easy to put myself out there. It feels vulnerable and scary. You never quite know how someone else will interpret the information that you are sharing. Still, I feel it will do more good than harm.
The day that I posted my video and blog about my continued struggles with weight loss, my husband and I watched “Stutz” on Netflix. If you haven’t heard of it, Stutz is a film directed by actor Jonah Hill. In the film, Jonah and his psychiatrist, Phil Stutz, share candid conversations about their own lives and therapy.
The film highlights “The Tools”, which were created by Stutz and used in his practice with his patients. It is easy to see early on, that Phil is not like “typical” psychiatrists. He has a unique way of looking at, and treating problems that his patients have.
Watching the documentary, it was easy to think about the Tools, and how to apply them to my own situation. When it came to the part of the movie when they talked about working on your shadow, it felt like they were talking directly to me. I am sure a lot of people felt the same way. I had just mentioned in my video and blog about depression and anxiety, that I needed to do a lot of work on my shadow self.
I don’t think it is any coincidence that I just happened to be watching this movie at the exact time that I needed it in my life. In the film, Stutz explains how to work with your shadow in a way that I had never heard it explained before. It made sense and really resonated with me. So much so, that I immediately Googled Phil Stutz after the movie was over to see if he has written any books! I was happy to see that he is in fact a published author. I immediately purchased his book, The Tools: 5 Tools to Help You Find Courage, Creativity, and Willpower–and Inspire You to Live Life in Forward Motion.
This movie has planted a seed. I cannot wait to see how it grows! Stay tuned for updates! I explained to my husband how I really felt inspired by this movie and it came just at the right moment. He reminded me that, “when the student is ready, the teacher will appear”, (a quote in which the origin has been debated).
Do yourself a favor and please watch this film. It is a raw and real look into putting work into yourself. Having the right tools can help foster your success in life!
