How to Make a Lavender Salve

Save For Later!

Lavender is known for is aromatics and soothing effects. I always have dried lavender on hand in my home apothecary.

What is a salve?

A salve is an ointment used on skin for it’s healing and soothing properties. Depending on how it is made, it can be used for muscle aches, dry skin, or scrapes and bruises. It is made from a mixture of oils, herbs and beeswax.

Herb-Infused Oil

One of the most important parts of making a salve is infusing the oil with herbs. There are many methods for infusing the carrier oil. I prefer to slowly infuse mine on the stove.

The key to this method is slow infusion. For this recipe, I used an olive oil. This is typically my carrier oil of choice. I used 12oz. (I had a lot of leftover oil. Next time I will use 6 or 8oz.). I added the oil, half a cup of dried lavender and a quarter cup of coconut oil to a double boiler. I slowly infused on a low heat for almost 3 hours. I then left the oil on the stove with the burner turned off overnight. This gave the oil more time to sit with the lavender in it.

Once the herb and oil mixture has infused and sat overnight, you will drain the oil through a cheesecloth.

Making the Salve

Once the oil has been infused and drained, you are ready to make the salve. To a double boiler, you will add beeswax. shea butter, lavender infused oil and essential oils (see below for measurements). Once they are melted you will add them to a jar or tin for storage.

Storage

It is important to make sure that no moisture is introduced into the salve. Moisture will “spoil” it, and could add mold and would no longer be useful. When stored in an airtight container, this salve can last up to one year.
