Menthol Peppermint Balm

Save For Later!

This menthol peppermint balm is soothing to achy muscles and good for relieving congestion.

all

I am trying to get away from pharmaceuticals and looking more towards homemade remedies that I can make on my own from my home Apothecary. (Always check with your doctor before choosing this route).

Replace Sports Rubs

With just a few ingredients, you can make your own balm to replace those smelly and sticky sports rubs. Admittedly, not everyone is going to have the ingredients on hand to make this, so it may require a trip to the store (either online or in-person). You can feel good about the ingredients that you are rubbing directly onto your skin.

Menthol Crystals

Prior to making this balm, I tried another one that lacked the cooling effect I was looking for. I did some research and came across menthol crystals. I had no idea this was a thing! These are food grade, organic crystals that are derived from corn mint (Mentha Arvensis). These are often used in salves, balms, creams and soap making, among other uses. I decided to give them a try and much to my surprise, they worked!

Menthol crystals can be irritating to the skin, so you will want to make sure that you test a patch of skin before applying on a larger area of your body. You never want to use these crystals without diluting them in other ingredients, so be sure to follow the instructions for this balm.

Ingredients & Instructions

For the base of this balm, I used organic sunflower oil. I chose this kind of oil because it is supposed to be less greasy. You can however, use any oil you would like. Using beeswax in this recipe is what makes the balm firm. You can use more or less, depending on what your preference is for how firm you would like your balm to be. In addition to the menthol crystals, there is also menthol oil and peppermint oil, which give the balm a pleasant smell. This recipe will make about 5 2-ounce tins. As always, when I am shopping online, I try to shop organic from small businesses that are climate pledge friendly!

Depending on how sensitive your skin is, it may take a few minutes to feel the cooling effect of the balm. Place a small amount on area you would like to soothe, but avoid contact with eyes, as the menthol may irritate them. Only use as directed and contact your doctor if you have a serious injury that requires medical attention!
