Natural 3 Ingredient Laundry Detergent

Save For Later!

This detergent has become my new go-to! I am done buying the bulky plastic jugs of chemical detergent.

All you need for this natural 3 ingredient laundry detergent are things conveniently located in the laundry aisle of the grocery store. This makes a big batch and will last for quite some time. I have a family of 4 and I went 4 months without having to make another batch! I also didn’t have to worry about using it up within a certain amount of time like the ivy detergent.

Ditch your Store Bought Detergent

Ditch your store-bought detergent and try this 3-ingredient laundry detergent. It is my second DIY detergent that I have made at home. You can check out the first laundry detergent I made here. While I loved being able to use ingredients found in nature to make detergent, it wasn’t necessarily the most practical.

I got sick shortly after I made the first few batches of ivy detergent and ran out and I realized very quickly that I did not want to be out foraging for leaves when I did not feel 100%.

This alternative has been much more practical for me and I still have the benefit of leaving all of those harsh chemicals behind.

Here is what you will need to make this detergent:

  • Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster
  • Borax
  • Fels Naphtha Bar Soap
  • Bowl & Utensil for mixing (I would recommend using separate spoonsbowls and graters just for making your detergent with)
  • Cheese Grater

Chemicals in detergents

Let’s go over again some of the chemicals that are found in store bought detergents.

Formaldehyde:

If you’re like me, the first thing you think of when you hear the word formaldehyde is the funeral home. Not exactly something you want to associate with clean laundry! Aside from funeral homes, this chemical can also be found in everyday household products. According to the EPA, this chemical is known to cause skin, eyes, nose and throat irritations. Additionally, they state that high levels may cause certain types of cancers. Yikes!

Dioxane:

Another harmful chemical often found in laundry detergents is dioxane. This if particularly harmful to the environment as it does not readily biodegrade. The EPA states short-term exposure causes throat, eyes, and nose irritation, while long-term exposure can lead to liver and kidney damage. Double yikes!

Fragrance and Dyes:

The fragrance and dyes found in laundry detergents are a mixture of harmful chemicals. Synthetic fragrances release harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air. Again, these chemicals carry short- and long-term effects.

All of this to say, this stuff can be really bad for you! And we are washing our clothing in it! We spend most of our lives in clothing, so we might as well make it healthier for us to live in.
