This year marks the beginning of me being sober for my second year during the holidays. Getting sober is not easy, and can be especially difficult to maintain during the holiday season. In the past, holidays were no holds barred for drinking. Drinking would begin in the morning with a mimosa – hold the orange juice!
Holidays can be stressful, so knocking back a few drinks can feel as though it will help relieve the stress. Add the stress of trying to remain sober and it can seem hopeless! In order to ensure you remain sober, it can be smart to plan ahead.
I have put together a few tips to help you stay sober during the holidays.
- Plan Ahead – Know your triggers so you are able to acknowledge and overcome them.
- Attend a Meeting – Look up Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings in your area. Take note of when meetings are being held so you can attend one if necessary.
- Limit Your Interactions – If you know you will be attending a gathering around people who stress you out or trigger you, have an escape plan. Limit the amount of time you are spending in stressful situations and have your own ride so you are not stuck somewhere uncomfortable.
- Share With Loved Ones – Communicate openly with friends and family about what they can do to help you stay sober.
- Practice Self Care – Take time to take care of yourself this holiday season. This can be something as simple as meditation or something bigger like getting a spa treatment. Whatever it is, be sure to take care of your mind, body and soul.
However you are choosing to celebrate the holiday season, I hope that it is full of love, joy and happiness.
