Be Prepared for Blackouts and Power Outages

Blackouts and power outages seem to be occurring more and more often these days. Make sure you are prepared for the next time the power goes out in your area!

Since I have moved into my current home almost a year and a half ago, the power has gone out well over a handful of times. A lot of those times have been during the cold, winter months. I have learned a few things along the way and I want to share them with you.

How to prepare For a winter power outage

Staying Warm

  • Have extra blankets available
  • Use hand warmers
  • Shut doors to rooms not being used
  • Close blinds and curtains
  • Hang blankets in doorways
  • Use door snakes or towels for drafts
  • Make a fort or pitch a tent
  • Use indoor approved heaters
  • Have extra wood on hand for wood burning stove
  • Purchase a Generator

Food & Water

  • Stock up on plenty of water
  • Have easy to prepare food on hand
  • Invest in a camping stove
  • Cook on an outdoor grill

Keep the Cold stuff cold

  • Limit the number of times you open the fridge and freezer
  • Freeze water bottles to keep food cold
  • Use outdoor refrigeration if it is cold enough

If You're on Well Water

  • Melt snow if you need water to flush
  • Line toilet with bag if you need to use the toilet. Waste can easily be discarded
  • Purchase a camping toilet
  • Fill the bathtub with water to use for flushing

Lighting

  • Candles are great, but don’t provide much light and are a fire hazard
  • Use lanterns or flashlights
  • Have extra batteries on hand
  • Head lamps
  • Use gear ties to hold up overhead lighting

Miscellaneous

  • Have games or cards
  • Books or crossword puzzles
  • Always keep devices charged
  • Have alternative ways to charge devices. This Ryobi device has come in handy several times!
  • Fill up gas tank
  • Have a house key!
  • Don’t plan on using garage door!
  • Check on your neighbors (especially the elderly)
  • Be patient!
