Chances are, you have been using the same brand of cleaning products most of your life. Which may make you wonder why you should make a switch now? The unfortunate truth is, these chemically laden products are harmful to your health. Your home can be a biohazard risk without you even knowing! Making the switch in your home to live naturally is very rewarding!
A quick Google search about the harmful effects of cleaning products brings up an alarming number of results.
Not only are the chemicals harmful to your health, they are also bad for the environment. Environmental Working Group (EWG), has multiple resources regarding cleaning supplies and your health.
Common household products contain dangerous chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can irritate eyes and throats, in addition to causing headaches. What’s worse, household cleaners can include possible carcinogens which are known to cause cancer.
Have you ever stopped to think about what clean linen scent is? The truth is, it’s made up! There is no natural clean linen scent. Clean linen or even fresh scent for that matter, is not a real thing. This is something made up by manufacturers to make your clothing “smell good” when you do your laundry.Â
You cannot go to the store and by a natural fresh air or clean linen essential oil, because it does not exist. You could, of course put together several different oils to make it smell like what we associate with clean linen. My point is though, the fragrance added to your detergents and softeners is only there to give you the illusion of cleanliness.Â
In reality, fragrance added to products is just a pleasant way of saying, “laced with chemicals”. Even products listed as “fragrance free” may contain chemicals to mask the smell of other ingredients.
Ever wonder why many popular cleaning solutions are blue? This is to make the product more appealing. Adding dyes, also helps make the product identifiable. And I’m sure you can guess that these dyes are also not the best for your health.
Maybe the information above isn’t enough to sway you, and that’s OK. Everyone has their personal preference or reasons for the products they use.
Instead of the gloom and doom, I want to share with you some of the benefits I have experienced since making the switch.
1. Number one for me is definitely the peace of mind I get knowing that I am making my home safer for my family.
2. Better control over the ingredients I am adding to my products. I know exactly what is going into my laundry and cleaning products now.
3. Making my own products is more cost effective. A lot of the cleaners and detergents I make include many of the same ingredients. They also last a long time.
4. Less clutter under my kitchen sink. The all-purpose cleaners I make replace a lot of the “room specific” cleaners.
5. I’m helping the environment. No more big plastic tubs full of toxic chemicals that get released into the air and harm the environment.
6. There are many DIY recipes available to try. If I don’t like one, I can always play with the recipe or make a new one altogether.
